Sharing

How come my video didn't come through when I shared the link?

The X, Facebook, WhatsApp, Text and Email buttons under "Or send a link" only send words and a link to Slangerator. Those apps don't let a website attach a file, so the video isn't included.

Whether the "Share video" button can hand the video straight to another app depends on your phone, its browser, its settings and permissions, and the app you're sharing to. It works on many phones, but not all.

The easiest way that works everywhere:

  1. Tap Share clip, then ⬇ Save video to download the MP4 to your phone.
  2. Open the app or site you want to post on (Messages, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, email...).
  3. Attach the video from your gallery, camera roll or Downloads, like any other video.

On iPhone, saved videos land in the Files app under Downloads. Open it there, tap Share, then Save Video to move it into Photos.

Why did I get a picture instead of a video?

Some older phones and browsers can't make videos. Slangerator makes a picture of the line instead, so you still have something to share. Updating your browser usually fixes it.

Ideas and feedback

Can I suggest a new character, or a better voice for one?

Yes. Open the Community tab and use Suggest a character (or tap + Suggest a character in the character picker). Describe who they are, how they talk and what their voice should sound like. If an existing character's voice doesn't sound right, suggest it there too, and say which character and how it should sound. We review every idea, and the top-voted ones become real characters. Keep them made up: no real people.

The slang doesn't sound like how people really talk. Can I fix it?

Yes. Translations are written by AI and can be wrong. Under a translation, write how a local would really say it in "How would a local actually say it?" and tap Send correction. When other people vote it up in the Community tab, the AI starts learning from it.

My words and the assistant

Can I see the words I looked up before?

Yes. Every slang word you translate, decode or look up a backstory for is saved in the My words tab, with what it means, where you saw it and the date. Search it any time. It's free, and it's stored on your phone only, not on our servers. Clearing your browser data or tapping "Clear my words" deletes it.

What is "Ask my assistant"?

If you have tokens, the assistant at the top of the My words tab remembers every word you've looked up. Ask it things like "what was that word I looked up last week that meant cool?" or "how do I share a video?" and it answers from your saved words and this FAQ. Each question costs 4 tokens.

Your saved words are sent along with your question so the assistant can answer, and we don't keep them afterward.

Word history library

Where can I read where a slang word came from?

Every word backstory anyone looks up is saved in the public Word history library. Each word gets its own page with its meaning, roots, timeline and a fun fact. Search it for free, see the top 20 most looked-up words, or browse A to Z. Only the word's story is saved, never who looked it up.

Which characters and words are most popular?

See the Stats page: the top 15 characters, the top 10 most looked-up words, the top Cuss Class phrases (hidden in Clean mode) and the top 10 countries using Slangerator. They're anonymous totals, never who did what.

Swearing in other languages

How do I say swear words in other languages?

That's what Cuss Class is for. Open the Cuss Class tab, pick a language (Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Arabic or English) and, if you like, a situation, like "someone cut me off in traffic". Tap Teach me.

You'll get how locals really swear and talk trash, what each phrase means, how to pronounce it, how rude it is on a scale of 1 to 5, and when you'd actually use it.

Tokens and purchases

What's free?

Translating, decoding, the glossary and word backstories are free, with a daily limit, and the free version shows ads. You also get one premium voice clip a day.

What do tokens get me?

Tokens pay for the better AI, premium voices after your free daily one, All styles and Cuss Class. Each button shows its token price. 100 tokens cost $1, and tokens never expire. Anyone who has bought tokens, Pro or Max also gets word backstories from the better AI.

Can I get a refund on tokens?

No. All token sales are final, and we don't buy tokens back, so start with a small pack if you're not sure. If an AI answer or voice fails, its tokens come back to you automatically. Lost your restore code? Email [email protected] with your PayPal receipt and we'll help.

What's my restore code, and how do I use it on another phone?

When you buy something you get a code that starts with "SS-". It holds your tokens and unlocks. On a new phone or browser, tap the 🪙 at the top, type the code in the Restore box and tap Restore. Keep it somewhere safe: anyone with the code can use your tokens.

Content and safety

Are the characters real people?

No. Every character is made up and doesn't represent any real person or group.

How dirty does it get? (Heat levels explained)

The heat slider decides how rough the language is:

Words are spelled out in full in the app; we only starred them here.

What it won't do, at any heat: describe sex or make sexual jokes, or use slurs that attack a whole group of people (like racist or anti-gay slurs). Calling your buddy a motherf*cker is swearing. Describing what someone did in bed is sex talk, and Slangerator doesn't do that.

Pro and Max are for ages 18 and up. Clean mode turns all swearing off.

Can I keep it family-friendly?

Yes. Turn on Clean mode to bleep swearing and keep things kid-friendly. You can lock it with a PIN. You can also list topics to keep out of your jokes.

Someone posted something nasty in the community section. What do I do?

Tap the 🚩 next to the post. It disappears for you right away, and we review anything that gets reported.
